iPhone 17e vs. Google Pixel 10a: Which Budget Smartphone Is Worth It in 2026?
by Vanessa Ricca, on May 12, 2026Two new smartphones, a similar price point, two completely different worlds. The iPhone 17e and the Google Pixel 10a are the most exciting budget phones of the year - and both hit shelves in Ireland in March 2026, almost simultaneously. Coincidence? Probably not. But which one is actually right for you? Let's compare them head to head.
Design and Build Quality
The iPhone 17e sticks to a familiar, compact design with a 6.1-inch display - easy to hold, lightweight, and now noticeably more scratch-resistant thanks to the new Ceramic Shield 2. There's also a new colour in the mix: alongside black and white, you can now get a soft pink. No Dynamic Island, no Action Button like on the bigger siblings - but solid build quality with an aluminium frame and IP68 water resistance.
The Pixel 10a steps up to 6.3 inches and has the most eye-catching design change of the year: a completely flat back with no camera bump at all. It looks cleaner than its predecessor and sits well in the hand. The frame is recycled aluminium, and the back cover is made from 81% recycled plastic - a genuine plus if sustainability matters to you when buying a phone. Colours: Fog, Obsidian, Berry, and Lavender. Also IP68.
Design verdict: If you love compact phones, the iPhone is the better fit. If you want a bit more screen and a more sustainable device, the Pixel is your one.
Display
| iPhone 17e | Google Pixel 10a | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 6.1 inches | 6.3 inches |
| Brightness | up to 1,200 nits (HDR) | up to 3,000 nits |
| Refresh rate | 60 Hz | 120 Hz |
| Protection | Ceramic Shield 2 | Gorilla Glass 7i |
There's a clear winner here: the Pixel 10a delivers a noticeably smoother experience with 120 Hz - and beats the iPhone on peak brightness by a significant margin (3,000 nits vs. 1,200 nits). A 60 Hz display on the iPhone 17e is genuinely hard to justify in 2026, especially at this price.
Performance and Software
The iPhone 17e runs on the Apple A19 chip - the same processor as in the iPhone 17, just with one fewer GPU core. That's still a huge amount of power for a budget device, and iOS 26 runs on it like a dream. Apple also brings Apple Intelligence on board, with features like Clean Up in Photos and Writing Tools across the whole system.
The Pixel 10a runs on the Google Tensor G4 - the same chip as its predecessor, the Pixel 9a. No upgrade to the Tensor G5 found in the flagship Pixel 10 range. A little disappointing on paper, but you'll barely notice in everyday use. Android 16 with the new Material 3 Expressive interface is genuinely enjoyable, and Gemini AI is deeply integrated throughout. Both manufacturers promise 7 years of software updates - a big tick on both sides.
Performance verdict: The iPhone 17e has the stronger hardware on paper. But the Pixel 10a is more than fast enough for everything you'll throw at it day to day.
Camera
The iPhone 17e has a 48 MP main lens with a clever trick: it simulates 2x optical-quality zoom by cropping into the sensor. No dedicated telephoto, no ultrawide. Image quality is solid - especially for portraits - but anyone who likes to experiment with their shots will hit limitations pretty quickly.
The Pixel 10a also packs a 48 MP main camera (f/1.7) plus a 13 MP ultrawide. Google has improved the camera software further: Camera Coach (a Gemini-powered guide for better composition) and Auto Best Take for group photos are two handy new additions. Google phones are known for their camera AI - and that reputation holds with the Pixel 10a.
Camera verdict: Both are solid for everyday shots. But if you want more flexibility and smarter camera AI, the Pixel 10a is the more fun camera phone.
Battery and Charging
The iPhone 17e has a 4,005 mAh battery and Apple claims up to 26 hours of video playback. Charging via USB-C: 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter. New this year: MagSafe with up to 15W wireless charging.
The Pixel 10a comes with a bigger 5,100 mAh battery and Google says it'll last over 30 hours. Wired charging: up to 30W (50% in 30 minutes with the right charger). Wireless charging: 10W via Qi.
Battery verdict: Pixel wins clearly - bigger battery, longer life, faster charging. The iPhone earns points with the MagSafe ecosystem.
Price and Where to Save
New, the iPhone 17e starts at €729 in Ireland (256 GB). The Google Pixel 10a starts from around €549 (128 GB) - a gap of €180 that's well worth thinking about.
