When a device arrives at the refurbisher, it undergoes a detailed refurbishment process of up to 40 steps. This includes the following steps:

• Data erasure: Old data is deleted, the memory space is overwritten and the device is reset to the factory settings

• Device testing: Technical experts test the device using approved and certified test software to ensure 100% functionality.

• Component replacement: Components are replaced if necessary with parts from the original manufacturer, or equivalent. Repairs are carried out by experts.

• Necessary revision: External signs of use (Depending on the optical condition) are removed by polishing and cleaning. If necessary, upgrades of the operating system are done.

• Grading the device: Technical experts or laser machines compare the exterior of the device with our guidelines and standards with regard to optical conditions (“premium”, “excellent”, “very good”, “good”).

• Finally the device is sold via our marketplace and comes with a 30-day free trial period and a minimum 12-month warranty

Since 2017, refurbed has grown from a startup in Vienna into a leading European marketplace for refurbished products. Founded by Peter Windischhofer, Kilian Kaminski and Jürgen Riedel, refurbed now employs over 250 people across Europe.

Looking back, the last years have been both interesting and fun! Some highlights were, besides the founding in 2017, the seed round in 2018 and our Series A, raising $16 million in 2020. In 2021, we continued with a Series B funding round of $54 million, and reached our first $1bn cumulative GMV as well as our Series C round of $57 million in 2023. In 2024, we expanded into Portugal, the Czech Republic, Finland, Belgium and Switzerland. In 2025, we reached profitability as a business, closed another funding round of $50 million, and reached $2bn cumulative GMV. In 2026, we expanded into 12 additional European markets, making us the biggest marketplace for refurbished electronics in Europe, and reached $3bn cumulative GMV since founding.
